Formed with classmates of West Seattle High School in 1981, Why played a mix of originals and covers. We covered a lot of bases back then, rocking everything fron Sun-era Elvis to the Dead Kennedys, from Stones and Beatles to 999 and Johnny Cash. And we played 'em all at warp speed. I have flyers from the following gigs: West Seattle High School Cafeteria (12/17/82); Eagles Hall in White Center (1/14/83); South Seattle Community College (2/25/83); The Embers Tavern in West Seattle (5/83). We recorded four songs at Applewood Studios in West Seattle - Living in the Grey Zone, Twenty Flight Rock, Slow Down, and our famous Wipe Out/Wild Thing medley. Our three night stand at the old Embers Taven on Alki was memorable for a number of reasons. One was that we were underage and our drummer Dave's mother was very protective of her boy. So after we had agreed to play the shows (co-billed with The Bombadiers), flyers were hung, newspaper listings in place, and a week before the show, the mother refused to let Dave play in a bar! There was no reasoning with her - her mind was made up. We called the Embers and broke the bad news to them and they threatened us with legal action because we had verbally agreed to do the show, thus it was an implied contract. Of course all of this boggled our little undereducated teenage minds, so after consulting with our own parents, we did the most logical thing we could think of - get advice from our high school business law teacher, Larry Lacktrup. Mr. Lacktrup said that, yes, they could take us to court over this, but it was highly unlikely. After we had a few heated discussions with Dave's mother, she finally relented and let him play - and we knocked those 20 people that were at the shows flat on their butts! The other cool thing about that show was the soundman by the soon-to-be-legendary Conrad Uno, now of Egg Studios. If my memory serves me well (and it rarely does), this series of shows at the Embers marked the end of Why. My infatuation with all things punk rock was forcing me to participate rather than just standing on the sidelines. And I certainly didn't want to deal with Dave's mom again! However, I would end up playing with Pat and Scott again...once I got the punk jones out of my bones.
